Is Your Money Safe with Your School Booster Club?

Article first published as Should You Trust the PTA with Your Money? on Technorati. An earlier version of this post incorrectly identified Julia Baldwin Elementary School as a PTA-member school; the updated version notes that the school instead operates a Home and School Club for fundraising.

Last week the parents at my kids' school got a friendly request: donate cash to the Home and School Club before the end of the year to claim a tax deduction for 2010. The appeal naturally didn't mention a shocking scandal brewing at a nearby school in our community. The San Jose Mercury News recently reported that two moms who served as Home and School Club officers at Julia Baldwin Elementary in South San Jose are facing up to three years in prison for stealing $30,000. The moms are accused of siphoning off funds earmarked for new jump ropes, school buses, and a kindergarten handwriting program, and treating themselves to manicures and lingerie from Frederick's of Hollywood. The pair also flashed club charge and debit cards at JCPenney, Old Navy, Piercing Pagoda, and other stores for their own benefit.

Wow. I ran the crazy story by my CPA husband, who has been auditing public companies for the past twenty-five years. "Can you believe that moms would steal like that?" I said.

"Most people will steal if they think they won't get caught," he replied.

Apparently, he's right. Theft from PTAs, PTOs and Home and School Clubs is more common than you think. A quick Google search reveals similar disturbing stories from Texas, California, Arizona, Washington, and Tennessee. According to the website PTO Today, even the nicest parents may be tempted to steal when need meets opportunity.

So how do you know if your money is safe with the booster club at your child's school? Parents should ask questions about the club's financial rules and policies. PTO Today recommends that organizations maintain a system of strict financial controls, such as requiring two signatures on every check, using financial request and disbursement forms, ensuring that cash is deposited in the bank promptly, and mandating that two people be present anytime cash is counted or handled.

According to my local paper, the new Home and School Club president at Julia Baldwin Elementary has now established these very guidelines. The club's former president and treasurer have already paid back the stolen funds and are awaiting trial.

Wigilia, A Polish-American Christmas Eve

Just in time for the holidays, Pauline Karwowski has published a touching and heart-warming children's book about a Polish-American family (her family) celebrating Christmas Eve.

Wigilia (pronounced vee-GHEEL-yah) includes rich details such as preparing the table for the family meal, what foods are served and what each symbolizes, and a visit from Santa... er, Mikolaj. In other words, all of the things a curious person would want to know about a different culture, but would feel too self-conscious to ask directly.

I've been reading Pauline's blog, Classy Chaos, for years and have been a fan all along. She and I first "met" through a funny little group started by BusyDad called The Weekend Bloghoppers. What a hoot!

We were both new to blogging at the time, still tentative and uncertain. I even had a different online moniker and a laughable (as in embarrassing, not funny) first blog.

While I've gone through a series of reinventions and redesigns, Pauline's writing has always remained consistent. Consistently lovely, that is.

Each of her posts is like a love letter to her family-- poignant, charming, witty, and hilarious. Likewise, her new book, Wigilia, is a love letter to her heritage.

On her blog, she often writes about her experience as an immigrant from Poland. She has shared her family recipes for pickle soup and stuffed cabbage, her unique prescriptive on motherhood, and of course, what it was like to travel with her children back to her homeland.

I'm not Polish (obviously), but I am the child of immigrant parents. I know how difficult it can be to embrace a new life without letting go of your history. I've experienced first-hand the heartache of being torn between two different cultures, which at times can be at odds with one another.

It was in the post about visiting Poland with her children that Pauline wrote:
I thank my children for helping me find my place in this world and I dream that their acceptance is ongoing and that it will grow into immense pride for our "second home."
How fitting that she created such a beautiful tribute to her family that not only keeps those traditions alive, but teaches the rest of us something new.

Disclosure: I requested a copy of Wigilia to review. To order your copy of Wigilia, please go to this website. It also makes for a fantastic gift. *hint, hint*

Speaking of traditions

[Find this adorable stocking here!]
Yesterday I shared our Gratitude Box tradition.

This year we will be adopting this tradition that Ashley Anne shared.

I cannot wait to write those notes for my kids' stockings.

Our Gratitude Box

We launched a new tradition in our home last year. Not only did we take on this new tradition in our home, but I gave it as a gift to several other families in our life.

As I reflect on the past few years, I can recognize that one of the greatest themes in my life over this time has been learning to be more thankful. I am learning to stop, to pause, to reflect, to meditate on the lovely. It has been a powerful thing in my life. I believe gratitude has the power to change our world.

So, in an effort to create space for reflection and focused gratitude in our family, I put together a "Gratitude Box".

I took shipping tags from Office Depot and numbered them 1 -15, one for every year of our marriage (we just celebrated our 12th year anniversary in August - woo hoo!).

And, over the weeks leading up to Christmas last year, my husband and I went through the years of our marriage together and chose something significant from each year to mark that year. We have tried to attach an object or photo to each of the tags that is connected to the year's memory, but we also write a brief description of what and why it is significant on the shipping tag.

We have our babies' hospital ID bracelets attached to the years that they entered our lives.

We have the key from our first house.

We have a Bible verse that was plastered all over our house to remind us to meditate on the lovely in the midst of a truly dark season, among other objects and tokens that help tell the story of our life as a family.

It was such a powerful thing for Drew and I to sit and reflect on our journey as a family, and how blessed we are, and also on the highs and lows that we have weathered together.

Our tradition is that this is the last "gift" that we open on Christmas, and as a family we will unpack the box and look at the concrete examples of favor and blessing and peace and joy that are woven in our story. I hope that this will become a highlight of my children's Christmas traditions, and that in the years to come, we will choose our year's markers together. I hope that one day when my kids get married, that this will be a gift that I can give to them - an empty box that is theirs to fill with treasured momentos that help them reflect on God's gifts to them.

I think that this could also be a lovely Thanksgiving or New Year's tradition. I plan on making it a gift that I give to couples who are getting married. I just know in my own life, that if I do not deliberately open my eyes wide enough to see the beauty in my history, and to purposefully choose to respond with gratitude, that I am missing out.

As a gift, I put together a collection of shipping tags, with numbers to mark their years. I like the metal boxes from IKEA, or the fabric covered boxes from Waverly that are sold at Target or TJ Maxx stores. I embellished the tags with some scrapbooking scraps to add a little flair and then fastened them together with D-rings sold at office supply stores.

I also printed this to go in the box:

Do you have any Christmas traditions that are focused on gratitude? What Christmas traditions are you hoping that your children will continue once they are off in families of their own?

Outing my hubby & his mini-van hang-up

(Photo Footnote: Identities of mini-van driver and riders have been altered to protect the innocent.)

My husband hates our mini-van. I’m pretty certain that he’ll only drive it if the kids and I are visibly riding in said car. Consider the consequences of driving the mini-van without the kids? Apparently, other dudes pity the poor male sap who has to drive the family truckster – or so I’m told.

About once a month, my hubby asks the same question: “Do you think we’re done with the minivan?” My typical tempered response: “What? No, honey. We’re not dooone with the minivan.”

However, our conversation recently escalated when our much “cooler” car needed to be smog checked. I suggested that we trade cars for the day. It seemed reasonable. He could drive the mini-van to work and I would take care of the smog check, which was awfully decent of me on two accounts.

First, shuttling kids around in a sport sedan is well, not always easy and requires that we all be extra mindful of crumbs and other crap left in the car. (Not my strong suit.) Second, I was saving him (us!) a late fee for a smog check that he had previously had two months to complete. (Yeah – fodder for another blog post.)

His response, “No way! I can’t roll like that.” Oh, if you could have heard my lecture, which included you should thank God that you have a good job and nice car to drive. Didn’t matter. He wasn’t kidding and he also wasn’t budging.

All this has got me thinking. Not necessarily about how stuff defines you, but how it makes you feel. My car screams mom-mobile versus the ubber cool "mobile mom." The van is all about function. Yet, it has the added benefit of comfort. It’s like eating a plate full of mashed taters with gravy – all comfort with heapings of mess. Ridding in his car is like wearing a leather jacket – all attitude, baby.

Clearly, the mini-van makes my hubby feel less hub-a-licious. I suppose that I could be more sensitive to his mini-van hang-up and not duck and hide when we’re riding around town. Nah, teasing him is waaay more fun.

Mama Love - Just Dance 2 for Wii

My family and I are new to the Wii system.  I have to confess, I have resisted getting a gaming system for a long time.  I imagined my husband and I sitting slack-jawed on the couch, joystick in hand, pretending to be shooting zombies or flying airplanes.  I still had a vision of the video games that were popular when I was in high school - the ones that sucked you into a sedentary position for several hours as you ignore your loved ones.

I must say, I have been pleasantly surprised by the Wii.  It has afforded us, dare I say, with actual quality family timeJust Dance 2 is a perfect example of the best of Wii.  It is an active and fun game that gets you off the couch and engaged with your friends or family.

Just Dance 2 is esentially a dancing game.  You hold the controls and try to mimic the steps that the dancers are doing onscreen.  There are over 40 songs that you can choose from, and most of them are very recognizable dance songs.  (My favorites are Hey Ya and Jungle Boogie).  It is a workout in disguise - I am often so intent on getting the moves down (and beating my husband) that I don't realize how much I'm breaking a sweat until I take a break.  My kids can play along, and I don't think I have ever laughed so hard as I have watching my husband attempt Proud Mary.

I am dying to have a Just Dance 2 party with some friends.  I think it will be more fun than karoake.

If you are looking for a family gift that will keep on giving well after the season, I definitely recommend Just Dance 2.

While Ubisoft provided me with this game to review, the opinions I've expressed here are solely my own and represent my honest viewpoint. Ubisoft, Clever Girls Collective and I promote Blog With Integrity.
