Homeopathic Cold Remedies for kids & adults

I think we all like to try the "natural" remedies first, but after seeing all the kids' cold meds being yanked off the shelves this Fall, it became even more necessary. Here are a few homeopathic remedies that have worked for me for nasal congestion and coughs.

1. I learned about this homeopathic remedy from Dr. Sears at http://www.askdrsears.com/. If you have a child with a cold who is either struggling to breathe through his nose (stuffy or running), or has a cough that is keeping them up at night, this is quite helpful.

Get a Vick's Warm Mist Vaporizer from the
drugstore or Target. Fill it with water and add a couple of drops of pure eucalyptus oil and pure lavendar oil to the water (you can find these in the essential oil section of health food stores -- MAKE SURE IT IS ESSENTIAL OIL AND NOT JUST FRAGRANCE OIL). Plug it in and let it steam up the room all night long. The moisture and oils will open up the nasal passages and help take away that tickle in the throat that makes one start coughing at night. It may not take it away completely, but it absolutely helps!

The added bonus is that the room will smell like a spa!
breathe deeply, mamas...

2. The 2nd homeopathic tip is that you can try using a tablespoon of honey (recommended for
kids over the age of 12 months) at bedtime instead of cough syrup. It has worked almost as well for my daughter as the leading brands of cough medicine. She also doesn't fight me on taking it!  There is also a natural cough syrup called "Sambucol".  It is sold at stores like Henry's, Whole Foods, and Mother's Market.  It is made from Black Elderberry (raspberry extract) and wow, does it ever work well for kids & adults!

3. For a natural and reliable cough relief, try a tea recipe recommended by M.D. Tieraona Low Dog (yep, that is the real name), Director of Education at the University of Arizona's Program in Integrative Medicine.
The thyme alleviates chest congestion and supports respiratory function, along with the throat soothing honey, sage and Vitamin C rich lemon.

Pour hot water over 2 teaspoons of organic lemon rinds, 1 teaspoon of sage, and 1/2 teaspoon of thyme. (Dried or fresh herbs can be used in this recipe.) Cover and steep for 15 minutes. Strain the tea, then add the juice of 1/2 lemon and 1 tablespoon honey. Drink 2-3 cups daily for cough relief.

  1. California Baby makes a bubble bath for Colds & Flus, made with essential oils. I haven't tried it yet, but I love her other products so it's something I plan to try in the future.
